About Peg Solitaire
A board filled with pegs, save for one vacant hole at its middle. A peg leaps the neighbour beside it and lands in the space beyond, and the peg leapt over is then taken, so every move reduces the count by one and the game runs to a fixed number of moves. Reducing the board to a single peg — and, for the full result, leaving that peg in the central hole — means thinking in groups of three rather than move by move, because a peg stranded alone at the edge can never be removed. The puzzle is several centuries old and has lost none of its bite.
How to Play
Move a peg by leaping the one next to it and landing in the vacant hole beyond, along a row or a column. The peg that was leapt over comes off the board. Finish with one peg left, ideally sitting in the centre.
💡 Tips & Strategy
Work towards the centre rather than clearing whatever is easiest. Pegs stranded on the outside of the board have very few moves available, and a peg left alone in a corner usually ends the game.
Think in packages of three. A group of three pegs in an L shape can clear itself entirely with the right sequence, and recognising these groups turns a chaotic board into a series of small solvable units.
Avoid creating isolated pegs. Every jump needs a peg to jump and an empty space to land in, so a peg with no neighbours is dead weight for the rest of the game.
Keep the centre occupied as long as possible. The middle of the board has the most connections, and a peg there is the one most likely to be useful in your final few moves.
