About Backgammon
Backgammon is among the oldest games still played seriously, and it survives because the dice never remove the decisions. You move fifteen checkers around the board towards your home quarter and bear them off, while a checker left alone on a point can be hit and sent back to the start. Every roll offers several legal ways to play it, and choosing between them means weighing the chance of being hit — thirty-six possible rolls, and any experienced player can tell you how many of them reach a given distance. Count the pips regularly: when you are ahead in the race you should simplify and run, and when you are behind you should hold a point and wait for a shot.
How to Play
Roll two dice and move checkers by each value, or one checker by both. A double lets you play the number four times. Landing on a lone enemy checker sends it to the bar, and it must re-enter before that player moves anything else. Gather every one of your checkers into your home quarter before bearing off may begin. Whoever removes all fifteen first wins.
💡 Tips & Strategy
Every roll is one of thirty-six outcomes, so play the odds rather than the feeling. A blot six pips from an enemy checker is hit about seventeen times in thirty-six; at seven pips that falls to six in thirty-six. Knowing which distances are dangerous decides most leaving-a-blot questions.
Build your home board before you hit. A hit only helps if the opponent struggles to re-enter, and hitting with an open home board simply returns the favour a roll later.
Count pips before choosing a plan. If you are clearly ahead, race and avoid contact; if clearly behind, keep an anchor in the opponent's home board and play for a hit. Playing the wrong strategy for your position loses more games than any single bad roll.
Prime rather than blitz when you can. Six consecutive points is an absolute barrier, and even four or five in a row makes escape unlikely, which is worth more than a scattered attack.
