Four in a row on a gravity board — a game that has been solved outright.
About Connect Four
Connect Four is a solved game: with perfect play from both sides the first player wins, and the winning move is to open in the centre column. That fact shapes everything below it. Because discs fall to the lowest free cell, every move you make also decides what your opponent may reach next, and the dangerous positions are the ones where a threat sits directly above a square you are being forced to fill. Experienced players think in terms of forks, two threats that cannot both be blocked, and watch the parity of the rows — which player will be obliged to play into the row where the winning square waits.
How to Play
Choose a column to drop your disc; it settles on the lowest free square. Four in a row wins, counted horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Block the obvious threats, and avoid filling a square that hands your opponent the one above it.
💡 Tips & Strategy
The centre column is worth more than any other, and the game is a first-player win with perfect play starting there. Contest it immediately; a player who owns the middle has the most ways to build four in every direction.
Think about parity. Threats on odd rows favour the first player and threats on even rows favour the second, because of who is forced to fill the square beneath. Building a threat your opponent must complete for you is how good players win.
Avoid playing directly beneath an empty square that would give your opponent a win. Every move you make hands them the square above it, and most losses come from a forced move that sets up their four.
Build two threats at once. A single line of three is easy to block; two lines needing different columns cannot both be blocked, and creating that fork is the real objective of the midgame.
